Action : Reduce use of disposables
|
Yes, I'll do this

- at work, I keep a set of silverware. when I buy take-out lunch, I refuse disposable plasticware, and use mine instead.
- I'm going to start carrying a set with me in my bag, too
- at coffee shops, ask for your beverage "for here", so they'll give it to you in a porcelan cup, instead of paper or plastic. it tastes much better, too! don't patronize coffee shops that only have paper cups.
- and canvas shopping bags, for groceries, of course ...

- Nappies are another big problem for the planet. There are hundreds of sites discussing the drawbacks of disposables, from the chemicals used in their manufacture, to the number of trees felled for woodpulp, to the landfill nightmares created by putting them in the rubbish. Less well known is that Cotton cloth nappies are also environmental nightmares. Do some research into the chemicals used on cotton crops and you will soon realise they are not the green alternative you might think. Organic cotton nappies are available, and a good choice, but I personally invested in Bamboo cloth nappies! I recommend them to everyone. More absorbent than cotton, Bamboo has a very short growth cycle, is easily cultivated and thrives without the use of chemical pesticides. It is takes less water to produce and is also highly bio-degradable. The terry cloth produced from bamboo is soft and silky, and a real delight to use on your baby! Why not do something nice for your child as well as the environment? Everyone wins!
