Dear friends, neighbors, and fellow citizens,...

We write to you because we have come to believe that global warming is the defining moral issue of our time. We are disrupting the Earth's balance in ways that future generations will not be able to fix. Its effects on our economy, environment, health, and national security are already evident.

What are we going to do about it? Many people are concerned, but don't know what they can do. We do know that changing light bulbs—though a step in the right direction—will not be enough.

Our mission is to build an overwhelming public mandate for real solutions to the climate crisis. Our politicians need to hear that the voice of the common interest is louder and stronger than the voice of special interests.

The science is clear: we can fix this, but we must act now. The economics is clear: we can afford to do it. Yet we have so far failed to act. The U.S. pledged to take action on climate change fifteen years ago, yet since then our emissions have steadily increased.

Solving global warming won't be easy. It will require an all-out effort—a transformation of the global energy system. But most of all, it will require science-based, long-term planning that is not skewed by special interests.

How can we make that happen? We are engaged in an unprecedented campaign of public dialogue and political action. We are creating a citizen's climate briefing, and taking it to our elected officials. We are building a network of twenty million climate voters.

There is still a great deal of confusion and ignorance about global warming. That must change. We can move a nation—if each of us moves two people.
