My thinking in 2009:
I'm getting my degree in Acupunture and Oriental Medicine at Bastyr. In my past life I was a web developer, and before that I was a systems analyst. in my spare time I'm a writer of short stories. My favorite thing to do every day is practice Qigong, and my next favorite thing is to hike in the woods of St. Edwards Park where my school is.
I've been obsessed by environmental problems and imbalances ever since I was a little kid and everything I learned about the topic made no sense to me. There was a time when I thought the whole world was going to fall apart and nobody was really noticing or caring.
I still think we're poised on the brink of oblivion, but enough people are upset about it and trying to change our direction that I don't feel crazy.
I try to live as responsibly as possible within my own world, with the choices I make, and in 2008 I was happy to be able to get the condo building I live in to change landscaping companies so we're now 100% organic, and using only solar charged battery operated mowers and blowers on our extensive property. Next on my list is solar. We live in a cloudy city but the roof of my building is flat and on the top of a hill, and so big you can easily pick it out from space. I think the sun will find it.
My thinking in 2007:
I see this as a systems problem, whether you’re talking about global infrastructure or personal behavior. That’s why so much momentum is moving us in the wrong direction. I’m interested in helping to find solutions that satisfy the short term needs of the system as well as long term objectives for sustainability.
I do believe that humans have a small window of opportunity as well as the capacity to avoid turning this planet into a train wreck. Since I am alive during this opportunity, it feels natural to help in this effort in every way that I can.
