As much as I'd like to go car free, or zipcar, my circumstances are such at present that I own and drive a car. My old car is approaching 190,000 and I'm starting to research having a different car. Any ideas/opinions/reviews of green/er cars?

Thanks

Mel,

Did you see our Drive a greener car action page?

for some reason, I can't get that consumer report link to load, but maybe there's another way to get to it.

I'd like some first hand experience info here, if possible, on the Action page!

Melanie

Have you seen this?

This is the place I went first to do some research: http://www.greencarco.com/     Something that really hit home for me was the information in the posters they have in their showroom. One in particular identifies different types of transportation needs and the minimum amount of energy needed to meet that need.

I recently downsized to an old '82 VW Rabbit Diesel, and happily get 40-50 MPG running on various blends of BioDiesel. Here are a few sites I used to help make a decision: http://www.biodiesel.org/   http://www.biodieselnow.com/    http://www.fuelwerks.com/

Happy hunting!
Amy

Hi Melanie - My personal experience (and I hope others are having better results) is the Prius is not all it is supposed to be.  We consistantly get 36-38 mpg.  While that is not bad it is not what they claim (TV ad last night claimed 60mpg).  My in-laws and a friend each have a TDI Jetta...and get 45-50mpg with biodiesel.  I would much rather be gas free AND get better gas mileage.  Dawn

sorry that your Prius isn't meeting your expectations. Mine consistently gets in the 48mph range (it's an 07) but as you state, that is still under the EPA rated 60MPG. Of course, those EPA ratings have long been criticized as they are determined under optimal (read: impossible to mimic) condition that we just don't see in the real world. The Jetta sounds like a great alternative though it's too small for our family (3 kids all in car seats/boosters) and we still have a dearth of biodiesel available around here.

We do hope that by the time my wife trades in her vehicle, we can go the biodioesel route. that's the plan right now. I know that Honda is planning to intro a line of diesel vehicles for their larger autos (she drives a Honda Odyssey Minivan right now). when those are available, we'll likely make the leap. until then, we'll just drive my prius whenever we take trips and offset the CO2 we are responsible for.

I can get you a fully electric car. Go to zapofconcord.com. My boyfriend is an official zap dealer and has the xebra for sale. It goes up to 40 mph, so it's perfect for the city.
